Hans Tschida from Angerhof Tschida in Illmitz is “Sweet Winemaker of the Year“

at the 2012 International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London.

The jury awarded Hans Tschida with Gold Medals for the following wines:
2008 Gelber Muskateller Strohwein; 2009 and 2010 vintages of Gelber Muskateller Eiswein; 2007 and 2010 vintages of Sämling Beerenauslese; 2007 Chardonnay Trockenbeerenauslese; 2006 and 2010 vintages of Sämling Trockenbeerenauslese. Over the past 16 years, the winery has regularly won IWC awards for its brilliant “Prädikat” sweet wine, and in 2010, he made it to the very top. Hans Tschida and fellow Illmitz producer Gerhard Kracher were both nominated for the international award. No other winery won close to the number of medals awarded to both of these estates from Seewinkel.

This year, around 12,000 wines were entered, and these were tasted by 380 IWC wine judges, who are international Masters of Wine, wine producers, wine merchants and wine journalists. Six chairmen oversaw the tasting panels: Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke, Sam Harrop MW, Charles Metcalfe, Derek Smedley MW and Peter McCombie MW. Every potential medal wine is tasted by a second tasting panel before it is awarded. To win a gold medal, a wine must receive between 95-100 points. Wines with points between 90-94 and 85-89 are awarded with silver and bronze medals respectively.

Sweet wine “Meister” Hans Tschida cultivates 30 hectares of vines in the wine-producing region of Seewinkel in Burgenland. The main grape varieties are Welschriesling, Chardonnay, Sämling (Scheurebe), Muskat Ottonel, Traminer and Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc). His wines can be found on the wine lists of restaurateurs and merchants throughout the world. His continued success has made his home town of Illmitz a true sweet wine “Mecca”.
